Rebuilding the Cottage

Photos from the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the Trapper Cottage in the 1990's.

Photos provided by John Durnell, who was the contractor for the reconstruction and breathed life back into the Cottage.

Pre-Construction, Original Front

The porch and veranda are completely closed in, the house is barely recognizable from its original form.

Pre-Construction, Original Side

View from the alley.  At some point there was an alley house behind the original structure, as evidenced by the lot being split into two in the past.  I'm hoping to eventually find more information on the alley house.

Pre-Construction, Original Back

A relatively non-descript view, however it holds a very important view into why the cottage lasted as long as it did.

Notice the Brick-in-Post construction that was covered up by a fake brick facade. A woefully large number of St. Louis houses have been torn down because St. Louis bricks are highly valuable construction materials. The facade, which would have hidden the house as a viable source of materials, actually saved the house until it could be properly appreciated for its historic importance.

This is the fireplace that has been rehabbed, see the separate page describing the rehabilitation.
